Washington PalmThe Washington palm, scientific name Washingtonia Robusta is a fast growing palm tree. It is extremely popular due to ease of cultivation and fast rate of growth.

The Washingtonia palm is also known as the Mexican Fan Palm and Mexican Washingtonia. It is native to Mexico, hence the common names of the plant.

The Washington palm can grow up to 100 feet tall. It has a very tall and narrow trunk with a small crown of fan-shaped leaves on the top. Because Washingtonia Robusta has a little bit of greenery on the top that looks like a hat, it is also called the Hat palm.

The Washington palm needs plenty of sun. While young it can tolerate shadow. It is a very drought and salt tolerant plant once established and can be planted near the coast. The tall landscape specimen will tolerate different soil types, but prefers well drained soil. It is cold hardy to 18 F.

W.robusta is propagated by seeds. The seeds have high germination rate.

Washingtonia Robusta is a perfect plant for large areas, commercial and industrial lots. The “skyscraper” plant is not suited for residential landscapes and small gardens like the Coconut palm and the Date palm.
